The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a death resulting from police action after an officer in the Northern Cape shot a suspect who allegedly tried to stab her.
The incident happened on Sunday when the officer and her colleague were conducting routine patrols when they received a report about a fight on Joost Engelbrecht Street in Port Nolloth.
According to IPID spokesperson Grace Langa, on arrival at the scene, the police officers found a 24-year-old male with an open wound on his face wielding a knife.
Langa said the man approached the police officers who asked him what had happened.
"It is alleged the suspect threatened to stab someone pointing at a certain house. He suddenly turned around and ran to the house he had pointed at earlier," Langa said.
The two police officers are alleged to have tried to stop the suspect and ordered him to drop the knife.
"The suspect allegedly ran to the gate of the house and discovered that it was closed and locked. He turned around and went straight to the police constable. He threatened without any reason to stab her."
The other police officer then allegedly attempted to stop the suspect and, in the process, sustained a minor injury on her index finger.
The suspect then went for the police officer, who repeatedly warned the suspect to drop the knife.
The suspect also ignored pleas from family members and members of the community to drop the knife.
The police officer, who was walking backwards at that point, tripped and landed on her back.
"The suspect then approached her with the knife [making] a stabbing motion whilst she was on the ground. He grabbed her firearm with his one hand whilst holding the knife in a stabbing position," Langa said.
Defending herself, the police officer fired one shot to ward off the imminent attack, Langa added.
The suspect was allegedly shot on his left buttock, IPID stated.
He turned around, walked for a couple of metres and collapsed. The suspect was rushed to hospital, where he died minutes after arriving. The police officer opened a case of assault with the intention to do grievous bodily harm against the suspect.
