The stabbing was one of two attacks on police officers over the weekend.

In Barberton in Mpumalanga, a man was arrested hours after on-duty Witbank Flying Squad members were attacked.

The two officers were shot at when they stopped to offer assistance to a motorist whose vehicle had broken down on the N4 in Witbank, said police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

A second vehicle stopped on the opposite side of the road. When the officers approached it, they noticed that rocks had been used to barricade the road. As they tried to remove the rocks, seven gunmen emerged from nearby bushes and opened fire at the officers.

One of the officers was wounded in the abdomen and was taken to hospital for medical attention.

In the early hours of Sunday, police in Barberton attempted to stop one of the suspected shooters during a routine check. The driver did not comply with the officers' instructions, so they pursued the vehicle.

One of the occupants opened fire on the officers and the officers retaliated.

The vehicle came to a stop and some of the occupants fled on foot.

A 30-year-old man was arrested.

An empty magazine and one spent cartridge case were found in the vehicle, Mohlala said.
