The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure is still "working on" appointing a fire consultant for Parliament, 13 months after an audit report made such a recommendation.

The department, and its minister, Patricia de Lille, remain adamant that all fire safety features at Parliament were in working order when a blaze gutted the National Assembly and parts of the Old Assembly wing in the early hours of 2 January.

However, the department doesn't want to say whether the sprinklers were on while the flames raged in the parliamentary buildings.
