Two Cape Town petrol attendants were sentenced to 18 months in jail for defrauding customers with cloned cards.

They allegedly swiped the cards when filling up for customers who were paying cash at a Sasol garage in Blue Downs.

Thembalethu Jamani, 33, and Xolani Mbangi, 28, were found to have pocketed R6 390 in cash in this way in July 2018.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Zinzi Hani said their sentence for the conviction of fraud was suspended for five years on condition they were not convicted of fraud again.

They were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

In a separate case, a man appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court on Tuesday for using a cloned bank card to pay at the Southern Sun Hotel in Cape Town on 4 April.

Oladimeji Emmanuel John Ayodeii, 39, was arrested by the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigations team.

They had been called by the hotel's management after a Nedbank card division manager alerted staff to a suspicious transaction.

He will remain in custody and will return to court on 12 April.
