KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested four men and seized R1m worth of dagga on one of the province's main highways, officials said on Tuesday.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said the officers were patrolling along the N3 on Monday night when they spotted an SUV on the freeway near the Wembezi turn-off.
"Police officers pulled over the vehicle, which had five occupants, and conducted a search of the vehicle. On inspection, police discovered 56 large parcels of compacted dagga, weighing 100kg, in the vehicle.
"The drugs seized has an estimated street value of R1m."
Zwane said the occupants of the SUV could not explain who their vehicle belonged to.
"The vehicle, as well as the dagga, was seized for further investigation."
The arrested men, aged between 19 and 29, were charged with possession of dagga.
"They were also found in possession of R27 000 in South African currency, as well and 5 000 in eSwatini currency," Zwane added.
The five men will be appearing at the Estcourt Magistrate's Court on charges of possession of drugs and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
