Polokwane – Limpopo police are investigating a possible link between the charred remains of an unknown person found in Ga-Maraba, outside Polokwane, and a missing woman from a nearby village, police said on Thursday.
Officers discovered the remains of a burnt Toyota double cab and the remains of its only occupant in Ga-Maraba on Tuesday, according to police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
An inquest docket was opened after the vehicle was discovered.
In Ga-Matlala village, which is 147km away from the car wreck, police had launched a search for a missing person, 47-year-old Veronica Mmapula Mahanyele.
"It is an ongoing investigation so we can't jump to conclusions, but we are investigating a possible link," said Mojapelo.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe confirmed that investigations were underway.
"Mahanyele was last seen on Monday when she left home driving a white Toyota Dakar double cab with registration numbers DGK663 L," said Ngoepe.
Officers and family members have been searching for her without any success.
