The man was murdered by a group of people in Polokwane on Sunday, said police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.

"The police were called about the incident in which a man in his 30s was being attacked and severely assaulted by a group of unknown men in Industrial Street [in the] industrial area of the city," said Mojapelo.

"On arrival at the scene, the police found the unidentified man lying in the middle of the street, already burned beyond recognition. The motive for the incident is unknown at this stage but mob justice cannot be ruled out," he said.

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has called for the "suspects to be hunted down and brought to book".

"We are making an appeal to anyone with information about the suspects or to help identify the deceased to contact Sergeant Philemon Ratsoma on 072 808 1188 or Colonel Linkie Mathebula on 064 756 8218, the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the nearest police station," added Mojapelo.
