The EFF failed in its bid to have a "Sri Lanka moment" when protesters marched on the official residence of President Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday, agitating for his removal from office.

This is according to Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, who said the EFF's action, in which a protest unexpectedly culminated at Ramaphosa's official residence, Mahlamba Ndlopfu, was an effort to copy protests in Sri Lanka, where a swelling protest movement breached the presidential palace.

EFF members gathered at Church Square and, at around 12:00, when EFF leader Julius Malema arrived, there were about 2 000 to 2 500 protesters present.
