As Steve Biko Academic Hospital experiences a sharp increase in Covid-19 patients in its triage area, doctors have detailed the pressures and shortcomings being experienced which include an alleged lack of resuscitation equipment and PPE.
On Sunday, the Gauteng Health Department said the specialist hospital was under great pressure due to an influx of suspected Covid-19 patients from other hospitals around Gauteng, and even other provinces during the second wave.
The department released a statement in response to images being shared over social media which showed patients being treated in the triage tents under a roofed structure at the hospital's emergency unit entrance.
