Limpopo - A group of rhino stormed a trio of alleged poachers, disarming one and damaging a gun on a farm in Bela-Bela, Limpopo police said on Saturday.
Three suspects – aged 36, 33 and 32 – were arrested on Friday afternoon after two rhinos were shot, spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe told News24.
"Shots were heard from the rhino camp and [a joint task team] reacted swiftly. On arrival they found that the suspects had shot two rhinos but they did not kill any," he said.
The suspects had fled and a damaged gun was found in the vicinity.
"Five sets of tracks were followed until three suspects were arrested. During the arrest, one rifle and 270 rounds were recovered."
Two of the suspects escaped.
The trio will appear in the Bela-Bela Magistrates Court on Monday.
Meanwhile, police are still on the hunt for suspects involved in the killing of two lions in Marble Hall two weeks ago.
Ngoepe said the animals were found with two of their legs missing.
It is suspected that the incident may be ritual related.
