A shootout between cash-in-transit security guards and a gang of armed robbers has left one suspect dead and two guards wounded.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda said during the robbery in Brakpan on Saturday, two G4S guards were injured.

Netshiunda said the van, with three security guards, was travelling on Lower Road when it was ambushed by the robbers.

A shootout ensued.

"One suspect was fatally wounded whilst two security guards sustained gunshot wounds."

He said an unknown number of suspects fled the scene in multiple getaway vehicles with an undisclosed amount of money.

Gauteng police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects, Netshiunda said.
