South Africa cannot be seen to be taking sides in the conflict after Russia's invasion of Ukraine - because it goes against the nation's principles.

Moreover, South Africa enjoys good bilateral relations with Russia and Ukraine, making it "unwise" to take a different position that can compromise these bilateral relations.
