SA edges towards 700 000 confirmed Covid-19 cases

  • To date, there are 49 515 confirmed active cases.
  • South Africa's death toll stands at 17 016.

As of 5 October, South Africa has recorded 682 215 confirmed Covid-19 cases, with 926 new ones identified in the last 24 hours.

In a statement on Monday evening, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said Gauteng accounted for 32.4% of the confirmed cases, while KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 17.5% and the Western Cape 16.3%.

Cases by province

Gauteng: 221 061

KwaZulu-Natal: 119 694

Western Cape: 111 517

Eastern Cape: 89 964

Free State: 48 662

North West: 29 979

Mpumalanga: 27 625

Northern Cape: 17 876

Limpopo: 15 837

While close to 700 000 cases have been confirmed, according to the statement by Mkhize, there were only 49 515 confirmed active cases.

Northern Cape: 2 905

North West: 2 663

Eastern Cape: 1 523

Mpumalanga: 661

As of Monday, 615 684 cases have been recorded which translates to a recovery rate of 90%.

Mkhize also announced 40 new Covid-19-related deaths, bringing the death toll to 17 016.

The Free State recorded 14, Eastern Cape 12, Gauteng five, Mpumalanga five and the Western Cape four.

"We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers that treated the deceased patients," Mkhize said.
