The head of the South African Medical Research Council has defended South African scientists' decision to reveal the existence of the Covid-19 B1.1.529 variant, despite limited information on it.

Professor Glenda Gray said telling the public about the new variant was vital as it might help change behaviour and curb the spread of Covid-19.
