Public interest law centre Section27 is hauling the SA Council of Educators (SACE) to court over what it describes as lenient sentences handed to teachers who administer corporal punishment.

In 2019, two teachers appeared before the SACE for assaulting pupils. In Gauteng, a Grade 2 pupil was assaulted on the back of his head with a PVC pipe by his teacher.

In Limpopo, a teacher struck a Grade 5 pupils on her cheek and then on her head. The pupil experienced lasting bleeding from her ears which required her to visit several doctors, resulting in her absenteeism from school. As a result, she had to repeat the grade.
