Squatters living in Riverclub, Sandton, were evicted on Wednesday.
Squatters living in Riverclub, Sandton, were evicted on Wednesday.
Alex Patrick

Birds scattered in Sandton's otherwise quiet suburbia on Wednesday when police forced themselves through a 60cm gap they created by pushing a heavy electric gate off its rollers at a posh Riverclub house.

Riverclub, according to SA-Venues.com, is known for its glitz, sophisticated buildings and people. However, the area's tranquility was shattered by an eviction in one of the houses where tenants had been squatting for the past two years, racking up R1.5 million in unpaid rent and utilities.

As curious neighbours watched the commotion and cars on the busy road crawled past with rubbernecking drivers, the silence was shattered with shouts of "our constitutional rights" and "this is bulls**t".
