Beleaguered health Director-General Dr Sandile Buthelezi asked for time off after he was slapped with questions over his role in the Digital Vibes saga.

On Thursday, health minister Joe Phaahla appointed deputy director-general responsible for the National Health Insurance programme, Dr Nicholas Crisp to act in the position.

News24 was reliably told that Buthelezi's suspension from the department was imminent and his taking of leave was preemptive.
