The Johannesburg home where convicted "Facebook rapist" and murderer Thabo Bester lived after his escape from Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein is just a street away from President Cyril Ramaphosa's private residence.
The home, located in the plush Hyde Park suburb, appeared vacant on Sunday when News24 visited the property. The gate to the home had a large silver chain on it and no security guards were at the entrance.
Two bins at the entrance were full of items, including packaging from fast food restaurants, pieces of synthetic hair and several rubbish bags. From what News24 could see, the property consisted of two parts – a main house and another piece of land that appeared to be in the process of being developed.
