The tension was palpable between former Treasury director-general (DG) Lungisa Fuzile and former finance minister Des van Rooyen's legal team at the Zondo Commission on Tuesday.

Fuzile and advocate Kgomosoane Mathipa bumped heads throughout the entire cross-examination - to an extent where the chair, Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, found himself repeatedly intervening to help the two understand one another.

Mathipa was cross-examining Fuzile on certain parts of his statement and his previous testimony at the commission, poking at parts that were contradictory to his client's version. It led to several instances in which there was a flare up between the two.
