As embattled KwaZulu-Natal MPL and former eThekwini Mayor Zandile Gumede prepares for her corruption trial in the High Court in June alongside her co-accused, court papers have outlined the journey the State alleges they took to end up in the dock.

Court documents seen by News24 paint a picture of how Gumede allegedly used a series of well-placed Durban Solid Waste (DSW) officials and political figures as high up as city manager Sipho Nzuza to as low down as a landfill site employee to allegedly siphon off hundreds of millions of rands of taxpayers' money.

In court papers, the State did not beat around the bush, calling out main "role players", including Gumede, deputy head of strategic and new developments at DSW Robert Abbu, chairperson of the eThekwini Bid Adjudication Committee (BAC) Sandile Ngcobo, Zithulele Mkhize, Bongani Dlomo, Craig Ponnan, councillor Mondli Mthembu and Nzuza.
