Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande has likened the nationwide fees protests at universities to a US soapie, The Bold and the Beautiful.

"It's instability at the start of every year," Nzimande told Parliament's Higher Education Committee on Tuesday.

He and student organisations briefed MPs on the current state of higher education in the country and fielded several questions from members.
