A pardon for Jacob Zuma is not on the cards, sources close to President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday, after KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala floated the idea of the former statesman's release as a solution to end a wave of violent protest action which gripped the province.

Two allies of Ramaphosa in the executive told News24 that the matter was not up for discussion, and that Police Minister Bheki Cele had been shouldered with the responsibility of restoring calm after a well-orchestrated campaign of civil disobedience was set in motion by Zuma sympathisers.

Before a pardon could even be considered by Ramaphosa, Department of Justice guidelines for these applications stretch this possibility well beyond Zuma’s grasp. The guidelines require a "reasonable period" to be served since conviction, and on this basis alone he would be unsuccessful.
