  • A 19-year-old man has been arrested in the Eastern Cape for allegedly shooting his mother dead and wounding a truck driver.
  • It is alleged that the teen first shot his mother dead on a farm outside Cradock.
  • Later, he allegedly wounded a truck driver on the N10 highway.

A 19-year-old man was arrested for allegedly shooting his 39-year-old mother dead on a farm outside Cradock in the Eastern Cape last week, and wounding a truck driver.

According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the mother was shot in her upper body at around noon on Wednesday.

"Police followed up some leads which resulted in the implementation of a 72-hour activation plan, and a hunt for the suspect [was launched]," Nkohli added.

The next day, at around 19:30, police received reports that someone who shot a woman at the farm had also shot a truck driver on the N10 highway towards Middelburg. The truck driver was rushed to the hospital after sustaining several gunshot wounds in his upper body.

"The search was intensified and expanded to cover a vast area [and] various SAPS units, with assistance from community groups and private security companies, which volunteered their services and worked around the clock," Nkohli added.

The teen was arrested on Friday afternoon when tracking teams, accompanied by police tracker dogs, cornered and apprehended him about 20 kilometres outside Cradock.

Police also recovered a firearm and a truck's key in the teen's possession, Nkohli said.

The teen is expected to appear in the Cradock Magistrate's Court on Monday.
