The third man on trial for the murder of Cape Town lawyer Pete Mihalik spoke openly on Thursday about the shadowy world of the "fence".
The fence is often portrayed in fictional series as an elegant broker surrounded by plundered antiquities or piles of hot TVs, offering lower than the retail price for stolen goods that will be sold to a third party, and taking a generous cut for the discreet service.
According to the softly-spoken Vuyile Maliti, for him, it does not involve velvet couches and languid negotiations over snifters of rare brandy, but hard hustling on the cellphone and deals struck in hired cars in suburban parking lots.
