East London - Two people were killed in an accident involving a bakkie along the R408 road in Willowvale, local police said on Sunday.

Captain Jackson Manatha said the man, 35, and woman, 40, died instantly in the accident, which took place near Mboya Village in Willowvale on Saturday afternoon.

Nine other occupants of the bakkie, including the driver, were seriously injured and rushed to Butterworth Hospital.

The cause of the accident is unknown and is being investigated by the Willowvale police.

Mantha said the bakkie did not collide with another vehicle and a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.
