Two men from Paarl in the Western Cape have been arrested for allegedly shooting at hawkers on the Sonstraal bridge at the N1 highway.
A 40-year-old man was killed in the incident, which took place on Tuesday at around 17:45.
Netwerk24 identified the victim as Chatwell Rogers. He was reportedly trying to flee the shooters when he was struck by a bullet. The two suspects were reportedly acting in self-defence.
The men allegedly fled onto the N1 highway, said police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk.
"According to reports, the two shot at illegal fruit sellers on the bridge, and when they fled the bridge onto the N1, another shot was fired towards the group, fatally wounding a 40-year-old man from Paarl East," said Van Wyk.
The suspects handed themselves over to the police at the scene.
"Two suspects, aged 65 and 68, from Paarl were detained on a charge of murder," Van Wyk said.
The men are due to appear in the Paarl Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
