Cape Town – No one has yet been arrested for throwing two suspected criminals into an old quarry filled with water in Marikana, North West police said on Tuesday.
The men were allegedly caught red-handed stealing from a local shop on Friday, Captain Paul Ramaloko said.
"The shop owner blew the whistle and the community responded. It is reported that the community assaulted the men and tied their hands, before throwing them into the dam."
They were apparently left there to drown. Police divers retrieved the bodies on Sunday.
Ramaloko said it was not the first time that disused quarries were used for crimes.
"Everytime there is rain, people are being thrown into this dam and people drown."
Two counts of murder were being investigated.
