A protest by taxi operators demanding Covid-19 relief funds in Tshwane was marred by acts of violence, including the alleged hijacking of one bus, the assault of a bus driver, the torching of a truck and the looting of another.

Thousands of taxi operators made their way toward the Tshwane CBD early on Wednesday, blocking several roads, including the R80 and N4 highways, along the way.

At the heart of the protest was the demand that government release R1.135 billion in Covid-19 relief funds promised to taxi drivers and operators, according to the National Taxi Alliance (NTA).
