While the eThekwini Municipality hopes to have all major beaches opened for the festive season, an expert has urged holidaymakers to closely monitor E. coli on beaches on the east coast.
A number of Durban beaches were closed and remain shut due to raw, untreated sewage flowing into the ocean following infrastructure damage during the April floods.
Janet Simpkins, director of Adopt-a-River cautioned: "All beaches are certainly not affected, but you just need to be aware and cautious and visit beaches that [are] a lot safer, and be careful of the changing nature of the water. If it smells funny or looks dirty, then you would need to find somewhere else to visit."
