Johannesburg's inner city was the scene of looting and stun grenade explosions on Sunday night as police faced off with looters until well past the start of the Level 4 lockdown curfew at 21:00.

Many of the city's streets were gridlocked throughout the day as sporadic pockets of violence flared up in various areas.

Tensions spiked even further after 17:00, as riot police and other officers were locked in running skirmishes with the looters.
