The recently elected ANC leadership in KwaZulu-Natal did not want Sihle Zikalala to vacate his position as premier, and initially rejected his resignation.

On Monday, they announced Nomusa Dube-Ncube, the current finance MEC, would be their preferred candidate for the premier position.

This would essentially make Dube-Ncube the first female premier in the history of the province.
