The Covax facility, which aims for equitable vaccine access, on Wednesday made its first delivery of 600 000 doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine to Ghana.

The west African country received the first doses from the Serum Institute of India, in what is the first batch delivered in Africa by Covax, which aims to distribute at least two billion doses of Covid-19 vaccines by the end of 2021.

In a statement, Henrietta Fore, Unicef executive director, said: "In the days ahead, frontline workers will begin to receive vaccines, and the next phase in the fight against this disease can begin – the ramping up of the largest immunisation campaign in history. Each step on this journey brings us further along the path to recovery for the billions of children and families affected around the world."
