A woman was killed and a man sustained serious injuries after a vehicle they were travelling plunged off Chapman's Peak Drive on Friday.

Western Cape police spokesperson FC van Wyk said the deceased was 55 years old.

On Saturday, Community Crime Prevention executive director Keri Cross said the victims were a married couple.

She added the woman was declared dead on the scene, while the man was in a critical condition in hospital.

The injured man was airlifted from the side of the mountain to a landing zone and handed over to Netcare, Cross said.

"My control room took the call and then organised fire and rescue, NSRI [and other role players]," she added.

After the man was airlifted and taken to hospital by ambulance, the woman's body was airlifted and handed over to the provincial pathology service.

Traffic services spokesperson Maxine Bezuidenhout earlier told News24 two occupants of the car had been injured.

The fatality has since been confirmed by authorities.

She confirmed a witness had reported the vehicle had plunged 200m down an embankment.
