Pet owners beware – in addition to possible criminal charges should your animal maim or kill someone, you can also be left financially crippled.

Amid a spate of pit bull terrier attacks causing outrage across the country, civil litigation is a viable recourse option for victims or their loved ones. And the financial implications for the dog owner, if not insured, can be dire.

The principle of actio de pauperie applies, said attorney Lufuno Musetsho from Musetsho Law Inc in Cape Town. This means that the owner of the animal is held liable for their actions.
