The spate of violence meted out against illegal miners - known as zama zamas - in Gauteng should be dealt with proactively by the government and private mining companies, according to experts. 

Lizette Lancaster, the manager at the Institute for Security Studies' (ISS) crime hub, says its protest and public violence monitor has seen an increase in communities protesting over crime in the last year.
