Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede, who rakes in more than a million rand a year as a member of the KwaZulu-Natal legislature, has been forced to dip into her pension fund to pay the lawyers representing her in her fraud and corruption trial.

She and 21 co-accused face charges of conspiracy to commit corruption, corruption, fraud, money laundering and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act, among others.

Outside court on Thursday, spokesperson for her supporters, Thulani Gamede, who is also the spokesperson for the Sanco Youth Congress in KwaZulu-Natal, told News24 that Gumede bemoaned the delay to the start of the trial.
