Go for ice cream!
Nothing helps to put a smile on one's face better than a scoop of handmade ice cream. Head to Trieste Gelato for a waffle and ice cream for R35.
Take a dip
Take a plunge and swim at Poolside in Maboneng. Cool down after all your city excursions with a dip in the Poolside pool while enjoying live music acts and a fun vibe. Entrance is free.
Get your heart racing with Paintball. Challenge your mates to a game of paintball at Woods Paintball in Fourways for only R150 per person.
Bowl 'em over
Else, you can opt for Bowling at Xtreme bowling alley located in Midways mall for R25 per person per game. They have a Sunday special of R15 per person per game every Sunday after 18:00.
Practice your ice pirouette
Try some Ice-skating at Forest Hill's Ice Rink in Centurion. They charge a total fee of R80 for skating and for hiring skates for the day.
Do an art stroll
Visit one of Joburg's free art galleries. Check out Wits Art Museum, CIRCA on Jellicoe and Sophiatown Heritage & Cultural Centre for the simple love of local art. A visit to one of these is a great way to get a feel of local talent, feel inspired and engage with an art crowd.
Chase the sunrise
Drive up to Melville koppies and watch the sun rise over the city. If you're feeling festive, take a bottle of vino or pop some champers to celebrate the beauty of SA.
Get your science on
If your kids love science, techno-gadgets and having their minds challenged, check out the Sci-bono Discovery centre. Adults pay R48 entry, while children pay R32.
A-Maze the family at the labyrinths, six minute mazes, climbing walls, rope mazes and so much more at the Honeydew Maze in West Rand for R150 per adult and R100 per kid or R420 per family of four. Their Moonlight Mazes also come highly recommended for fun-seekers.
Catch some waves in the landlocked golden city
Drive out to Sun City's famous Valley of Waves at Sun City. Adults pay R160 - R190 entrance, children are R70 - R80 and senior citizens only pay R80 - R85.
Chase a waterfall
Go on the scenic Uitkyk trail (4 hours) early one morning and spend the afternoon at the waterfall. This is quite a demanding nine-kilometre walk in the Magaliesberg reserve - with the steep trail leading to the falls overlooking the Hartbeespoort Dam.
Up for a bigger challenge? Go hiking! Take a hike at the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve or cycle one of the many mountain bike trails on the outskirts of the city.
Watch a movie under the stars
Take bae to an Outdoor cinema - Get a ticket-pizza+drink combo for around R155 online or just snag a ticket at R50 apiece online for the funky Bioscope outdoor cinema on rooftops and open spaces across Jozi.

Picnic in the garden shade
Pack a picnic and cool off at the Pretoria National Botanical Garden, divided into two sections by a 35-metre high quartzite outcrop. The two areas are completely diverse - a chilly south-facing section and a warmer north-facing section. Entry charges are R35 for adults, R20 for SA students (with valid student card) and R15 for scholars (kids).
Go bird watching
Go Bird Watching at the Monte Casino Bird Sanctuary in Monte Casino for R75 (adults over 11) and for R50 (children between 2-11). You can spend the entire day reading, relaxing and hanging with the peaceful birds.
Trail through markets
Max out on all the Markets! Opt for a lunch at one of the many pending Gauteng Christmas markets. They're the perfect fit for a budget lunch, and the grub can be tastier than at many restaurants.
