Buy a book and help a donkey in need at McGregor's Eseltjiesrus Book Fair

The Eseltjiesrus Book Fair is coming to the little town of McGregor from Friday, 18 May to Sunday, 20 May.

This year will mark the 12th anniversary of the Book Fair that aims to draw book hunters and enthusiasts from around the country with its wide range of books that will be featured.

Whether you are looking for non-fiction, the latest novels, books on travel, poetry, self-help, cookery, children's or Afrikaans books, the event promises both new and fresh pre-owned books by the thousands. The organisers will also be putting out new stock every day.

Helping donkeys in need

The Book Fair aims to help donkeys in need by aligning with Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary. There will be a vast range of more than 15 000 books on a variety of topics available for sale at pocket-friendly prices, and every book purchased will see proceeds that go towards aiding the donkeys at the sanctuary.

Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary offers abused, neglected and elderly donkeys a permanent refuge just outside of McGregor. They are then given the opportunity to live out their lives with respect and dignity while being surrounded by their own kind.

The sanctuary says that it strives to ensure that each donkey is cared for and checked daily according to their individual needs and ages.

It adds that they also receive a growing amount of queries from across the country regarding good donkey care.

The sanctuary elaborated that many donkey-related issues arise as consequence of ignorance or the misbelief that donkeys do not need regular handling or appropriate care.

"Each individual donkey that is helped is one less in pain, discomfort or suffering mental anguish," says the sanctuary. The success of the Book Fair in McGregor will play a major role in determining the amount of support toward the work done at the Donkey Sanctuary.

The event organisers say that the community also benefits from this event - not just the donkeys. The event is known to create work, see books donated to schools and libraries in the greater Langeberg area, and this year the event will also feature a Storytelling and Book reading theatre.

The organisers will enlist volunteers to read to children from books that will be donated to the Breede Skills Centre afterwards so that the kids can continue hearing wonderful stories. The Book Fair wants to assist in creating a culture of reading among children, as it believes that no one should be deprived of the joy of reading a good book.

There are promised to be loads of books available for you to feast your eyes and mind on at the event! Why not embrace your inner book-squirrel and go nuts by hoarding some good reads for the long winter ahead, while helping out some donkeys in need?
