Cape Town - Do you love languages? If so then you'll love this little language quiz tool being featured by Quartz, using audio clips from the Wikitongues project, which aims to collect videos of native speakers in all of the world’s tongues.
There are roughly 6 500 spoken languages in the world, according to the lore of languages as noted by Google. And of those recorded, about 2 000 languages have fewer than 1 000 speakers.
Of the 11 languages spoken in South Africa the most popular is isiZulu as the mother tongue of an estimated 22.7% of the SA population, followed by Afrikaans at 13.5% and English at 9.6% - according to a census done in 2011.
Globally the most spoken language is Mandarin Chinese, with an estimated 1 213 000 000 people in the world that speak the Language.
