It's all Greek to me: Explore the wonders of Corfu

Corfu is the 7th largest of the Greek islands, and has much to offer.

Visitors can hike, gorge on fine food and explore the beautiful nature.

Its rich vegetation earned it the name 'Green Island.'

QUICK GUIDE TO GREECE: Fun under the Mediterranean sun

The Royal Cafe in Kanoni, south of the city of Corfu, affords a breathtaking view of Pontikonisi - the uninhabited 'Mouse Island' which is a landmark of Corfu - as well as of the 'Monastery Island'. Plane spotters also get an excellent view of the airport's runway at this cafe.

Every 30 minutes, you can be sure to find a boat ride taking tourists from Kanoni's quaint port over to the Mouse Island where many tend to visit the Byzantine chapel, reportedly dating back to the 11th or 12th century.

Adventure-chasers and adrenaline junkies can be sure to get their fix along the long stretches of beach sand and coast that edges the island. The dunes are a nature reserve, but the idyllic and seemingly endless Halikounas beach is the perfect spot for kite surfing.

You can also swing a visit to a royal home in the area - the summer palace of Austrian empress, Elisabeth, which was built in the 19th century.

According to a local tour guide, Anna Vasilaki, the palace Achilleion was named after the legend of Achilles who was the empress's favourite hero of the Trojan war - for her he embodied the strength and beauty of ancient Greece. The palace is dotted with art and sculptures dedicated to the Greek icon.

Swing by Spianada square when visiting Corfu. It is known as the largest square in the Balkans. Under Venetian occupation, the square was used as a parade ground, however, these days it is a nice park with a cricket field - a sport, Vasilaki explained, that was adopted during the English occupation.

From the square you also get a good view of the palace of St Michael and St George which was built during the English occupation in the early 19th century near the Venetian era fortress.

Corfu's Old Town is a mix of French, British and Venetian architecture and is marked as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

And if the town starts getting a little too cool to handle and the midday heat starts to fade - head on back to the shores.

It is the perfect time for a bout of stand-up paddle boarding and enjoying some of Corfu's spectacular sunsets from the water.

And once you're all beat from touring and exploring, head on over to the aptly named Old Town Restaurant for a scrumptious dinner featuring traditional island dishes - like the popular Sofrito dish, which is a stew of beef or veal.

After filling your belly head back to the streets to explore Corfu's vibrant nightlife.
