SAA leadership rocked by scandal - again

Cape Town - South African Airways (SAA) acting chairperson Dudu Myeni has asked the auditor general to investigate SAA CEO Monwabisi Kalawe over four allegations.

Details of a confidential report published by Beeld, claims Kalawe kept the SAA board in the dark, misleading it about his alleged efforts to buy shares in the now "insolvent" Senegal Airlines.

Further allegations included “defrauding customers by charging them for a baggage-wrapping service they did not receive, fuel procurement irregularities and his refusal to sign a performance agreement”.

BDlive quoted Kalawe as saying he expected "sabotage" when he took over leadership of the embattled national carrier.

Kalawe was appointed CEO after the SAA Board of Directors removed then acting CEO, Vuyisile Kona early in 2013 and he started off his term of leadership with the huge responsibility of putting SAA's new turnaround plan into action

Fin24 reports Kona was axed by Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba due to “Corporate governance allegations” also spearheaded by Myeni.

It resulted in a “break down in leadership to a point where it would not be possible for him (Kona) to lead or function optimally, either as a member or board chairperson” Gigaba said.

According to BDlive, Kalawe refuted the allegations and stated he is happy for any government structure to investigate him but that it would have to be done through the board and the terms of reference would have to be specific.

Gigaba’s spokesperson Mayihlome Tshwete said he would not comment directly on the substance of the allegations.
