Cape Town - The highly-acclaimed National Geographic has revealed the Top 20 must-visit destinations for 2016.
The destinations were announced in the NatGeo Traveler Best of the World edition - which for the first time featured a photograph of an amateur photographer on the cover.
The mag asked photographers from around the globe to enter their photographs for the 'Best of the World' December 2015/January 2016 issue's cover.
The winning image was photographed by Victor Lima, a Brazilian amateur photographer, who submitted the photo as part of an assignment on Your Shot, National Geographic’s photo community.
Lima’s striking image of a waterfall in Goiás, Brazil, was chosen by NatGeo Traveller editors out of more than 34 000 submissions.
"This year’s 'Best of the World' list truly represents travel’s superlatives,” says Maggie Zackowitz, National Geographic Traveller editor in chief.
"We are thrilled to be the first major magazine to publish a reader photo as our cover image, especially one shot by an amateur photographer who bought his first camera just a year ago.”
In their 'Best of the World' Top 20 destinations, South Africa's neighbouring country Botswana is listed.
The mag praises the Okavango Delta saying, "In a part of the world not given to small gestures and bland landscapes, Botswana's Okavango Delta still manages to leap out at a person as a singularly unlikely miracle".
Here are 12 of our favourite NatGeo destinations for 2015, in no particular order:
Okavango Delta, Botswana
South Georgia Island
Capability Brown's Gardens, Britain
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park

National Geographic Travel is also partnering with Pinterest to invite readers to share where they dream of traveling next.
On 18 December 2015, readers may create boards with the hashtag #NatGeoWanderListContest, pinning images of places they think people should visit in 2016 and submitting the board online.
Boards will be judged based on theme alignment, creativity and originality, with winners announced in January 2016.
Prizes, including a camera, will be awarded to creators of the top three boards.
