Cape Town - The Mother City icon Table Mountain might get a dusting of snow over the weekend, as bitterly cold and wet conditions have been forecast for all high-lying areas of the Western Cape.
Snow Report SA posted an updated forecast on Thursday evening, 30 June, saying, "Table Mountain could get a nice dusting [of snow] during the early hours of Friday, 1 July. Only 2cm of snow is expected, but at just over 1 000m above sea level, this is quite impressive!"
The South Africa Weather Service spokesperson Wayne Venter confirmed to Traveller24 that snow can still be expected on Table Mountain later on Friday.
"Sleet and a light dusting of snow can be expected as freezing levels are dropping quite significantly," says Venter. However there is a clearance coming through in the evening as well as expected rain that would see it washed away quite quickly, he says.
The previous time snowfall was recorded on Table Mountain was in 2014, on 5 July. At the time, excited hikers and adventurers disregarded the cold and gale force winds, and hiked up the mountain to see the snow for themselves.

The South African Weather Service also warned earlier that the upcoming weekend is expected to be super cold as a cold front with wet weather and possible snowfall hits the country from the south-west on Friday.

South African Weather Service spokesperson for the region Garth Sampson told Traveller24 the cold front "will be accompanied by gale force winds, very cold temperatures and showers of rain over the southern parts near the south of Somerset East, Hogsback between Plettenberg Bay and the Kei River."
Snow is also expected on the southern mountains and will include Baviaanskloof Mountains, Tsitsikama Mountains, Amatola/Winterberg Mountains around Hogsback, says Sampson.
