Previously the Reserve's management had initiated a de-horning campaign on the resident adult rhinos, all of which have been de-horned. Tragedy struck yesterday, when two sub-adult males, too immature for the procedure, were victims of this abhorrent and criminal act.
"We had applied for permits for them to undergo de-horning later this year," says a clearly distressed Rob Le Sueur, the committed conservationist who conceptualised and established Nambiti Private Game Reserve at Elandslaagte, near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal. "We - and I speak for all the Reserve's lodge owners and management- are devastated. It's a tragedy. This appalling act has to be stopped."
To de-horning was a tough decision, but the fact that the de-horned rhinos were untouched is proof that the procedure, performed in the best interest of the rhinos, was successful.
To de-horn or not to de-horn is no longer the question.
