When you're more interested in saving your money for excursions than spending it all on a flight ticket just so you can hit the best season, your dates suddenly become extremely flexible, especially if you start planning your trip early.

You could be sipping cocktails on Mauritius, go on adventures in Reunion or be the first of your squad to check out of one of the least visited islands in the world - São Tomé. All while feeling content that it didn't cost you an arm and a leg to get there.

Cheapest month: October and the beginning of December offers some of the cheapest flights to Mauritius, but includes making a stopover through Reunion.

Budget: Between R5 500 and R8 000 for a return ticket.

Cheapest month: June seems to be the best for your pocket, including cheap direct flights with Air Austral.

Budget: A direct flight can be as low as R5 300 if you choose the right days, but stopover flights with other airlines go up to R16 000.

Seychelles (Mahe Island)

Cheapest month: Most of June has the best deals, and the best deal is flying direct with Air Seychelles from Johannesburg.

Budget: Around R5 700 for long stopover flights to about R9 300 for direct flights.

São Tomé

Cheapest month: To get the best deals with direct flights, TAAG Airlines fly for the best price on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays direct from Johannesburg, and from Cape Town you'd have to a stopover in Luanda. September offers the best deal with them.

Budget: Around R5 300 if you get the best deal, but it can go up to R7 000 for busier times.

Comoros (Moroni Island)

Cheapest month: Skyscanner picked September as the cheapest month, though the price stays consistent throughout the year. 

Budget: Return tickets can be just under R7 000, but can go up to R12 000 for faster travel.

St Helena

Cheapest month: The cheapest flights to the isolated island are in March.

Budget: Not the cheapest destination, tickets start at around R13 600, and can hike up to about R18 300.

Cheapest month: The cheapest tickets fall in October, but these normally include stopover flights in countries like Kenya and Ethiopia.

Budget: For the long stopover flights you can get tickets for just over R5 000, while direct flight can be between R6 500 and R8 700.

Cheapest month: Check out August to help out your wallet, but the cheaper flights involve stopovers.

Budget: Stopover flights start around R7 300, while direct flights from Joburg start at R10 200.
