Student demonstrations over a fee hike in 2017 were in their fifth day running on Friday, 23 September.

On Monday, Minister of Higher Education and Training Blade Nzimande said universities in South Africa could increase their fees by no more than 8% in 2017.

Moments after that announcement campus demonstrations* began. Protests have grown increasingly tense throughout the week.
