The Sandton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) recently took in and is caring for 450 battery chickens after a concerned member of the public alerted the organisation to a broken down truck carrying chickens last week.
The front tyre of the truck had burst, leaving the vehicle stranded on the M1 southbound near the Corlett Drive off-ramp.
The chickens were packed in broken crates, with little space to move.
The SPCA removed the chickens from the truck and upon further investigation, discovered that they were headed to an illegal chicken abattoir in Hillbrow.
"We have previously removed chickens from this abattoir and we have laid criminal charges against the owner for operating an illegal abattoir, for subjecting these chickens to cruelty and for contravening the Animals Protection Act," Jaco Pieterse, Sandton SPCA general manager told News24.
The owner, however, wants his chickens back. Both parties are set to appear in the High Court in Johannesburg on Tuesday afternoon.
