During a visit to KwaZulu-Natal last week, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize warned the province was "on course for a surge" as it approached its peak.

Mkhize said on some days KZN had even surpassed Gauteng in positive cases recorded per 24 hours, making it the new "epicentre".
