WATCH | Let it snow! Sutherland experiences first snow of 2020

accreditation

The sleepy Karoo town of Sutherland on Tuesday woke up to its very first snow of the year.

Hanru and Hardus du Plessis, aged four and five, were particularly excited as they watched the snowflakes fall from the sky.

"It's snowing, it's snowing!" they shouted, their mother, Helanie du Plessis, told News24.

Du Plessis, who has been living in Sutherland for 10 years, said seeing the snow will never get old.

"It's magical every time I see it snowing."

Du Plessis quickly grabbed her phone to capture the snowfall before it disappeared.

"It started snowing at 08:00 and continued for 40 minutes before it ended," Du Plessis said.

With their winter jackets out and summer clothes packed away, the family of four made sure to prepare for the cold weather.

"During the colder months, we always use the electric blankets. I make boontjie (beans) soup and bake a lot of bread for the family," Du Plessis said.

"The evenings are spent in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine," she added.

The South African Weather Service warned communities in the south-western areas of the Western Cape to brace themselves for a cold front, bringing strong winds and rainfall.
