President Cyril Ramaphosa will address the nation live on Thursday evening, day 14 of the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
Ramphosa visited the Department of Health’s Covid-19 Information Centre in Pretoria earlier in the day.
Last week, the National Command Council briefed the media on several amendments made to the lockdown regulations. Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma allowed for travel between cities and provinces, specifically for those attending funerals. Taxis are also allowed to operate with a loading capacity of 70%, as per the revised regulations.
Separated parents are also now allowed to move their children between houses during the lockdown, provided they meet certain legal requirements.
South Africans however still cannot buy cigarettes.
On 8 April, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize confirmed 96 new cases of Covid-19. This brings the total number of cases in South Africa to 1 845. The number of deaths have increased to 18.
